Language Classes

The Tuesday evening Language Classes provide a formal approach to learning and practising the Indonesian language. Classes are held from 6.30pm to 8.30pm punctuated by a 15 minute break about two thirds of the way through. Cost is $325 per 10-week term if paid in two instalments, less 10% if paid for the full term by the first night, and pro rata for shorter or longer terms.

  • Language class participants are required to join the AIAV.
  • Terms run parallel with normal school terms except that first term starts one week later and fourth term finishes one week earlier.
  • All classes are conducted by qualified teachers who are native speakers of Indonesian
  • The programme of 5 levels of participant competence is headed by Mr Tata Survi and taught in 6 classes
  • Classes are held in Rooms 2105, 2108, 2112, 2113, 2115 & 2117 at the Hawthorn campus of the University of Melbourne on the corner of Auburn Road and Woodburn Street (see map below)

TERM DATES:

  • Term 1…   8 sessions   2nd February  -   23rd March, 2010
  • Term 2…   11 sessions  13th April      -   22nd June, 2010
  • Term 3…   10 sessions  13th July      -   14th September, 2010
  • Term 4…   9 sessions   5th -26th Oct  & 9th Nov- 7th Dec, 2010

FEES AND PRACTICALITIES:

Class fees are based on a rate of $32.50 per 2-hour session. To ease the administrative burden, payment is required no later than at the time of attending the first class for the term, lessened on a pro rata basis if starting the term in a subsequent week. The total payable is reducible by 10% if paid for the full term before the first class attended in the term. So, 1st Term’s fee this year of 8 weeks x $32.50 (= $260) is reducible to $234 (equating to $29.25 per session).

There is no other concession and there are few circumstances in which a participant, who knows in advance that he or she cannot or may not be able to attend certain of the classes, may be able to arrange attendance and payment on some other basis. Refunds are not made for casual absences and refunds for any other reason take the form of a credit for classes missed to be applied against attendance in the next or subsequent term.

The AIAV requires all class participants to be members of the Association, so that they come under the insurance cover it has for its activities. It also requires a telephone number and both e-mail and postal addresses for each participant for communication generally and in case of any emergency preventing the holding of class. It is also always helpful to know in advance if you cannot attend a particular class. Apart from classes, other benefits of membership range from monthly conversation evenings (Malam Ngobrol) to talks, dinners, the AIA News and the AIAV’s own Gamelan orchestra, Permai.

Introductory Class

This class for outright beginners is useful for those who want to eventually progress towards fluency but in the meantime would like to acquire some travel basics. This means paying attention to pronunciation of the language and learning greetings, exclamations, terms of address, family relationships, eating, public transport, health, shopping and physical activities. It is conducted by Bu Ratna Wijaya and has a prescribed text and workbook. Unlike all the following levels which may be joined at any juncture of the term, this class may only be joined on the first night of each term.

Post Introductory Classes A & P

These two classes are conducted at more or less the same level by Bu Anita Sartika Dewi and Pak Paulus Sarwoto for participants who have some familiarity with Indonesian but are not yet ready to proceed to the sub-Intermediate or Intermediate class. These classes are still conducted in English, but participants using the same workbook prescribed for the introductory class, are encouraged to write and speak in Indonesian and covering the subject material of the introductory class at a more sophisticated level.

Sub-Intermediate and Intermediate Classes

These two classes are conducted by Bu Cucu Juwita and Pak Faizul Nurlawis. In these classes instruction occurs in both languages, frequently Indonesian followed by an explantion in English. Conversation covers a range of topics, enabling an impressive acquisition of vocabulary suited to all sorts of daily activites. Learning is aided by occasional role playing and the use of a range of materials including textbooks, media articles, films, poetry and songs.

For Advanced Students

The advanced class with Pak Tata Survi is particularly useful for teachers of Indonesian in Australian schools seeking reinforcement in an adult conversational context and for others outside the teaching profession who wish to maintain or improve an already good standard of Indonesian. The advanced classes are conducted almost entirely in Indonesian, with resort to English only to aid explanation or understanding of finer points of grammar or vocabulary. Material covered includes print and video current affairs, feature articles dealing with political, social and economic issues, advertising, Indonesian films, poetry and popular music. Cross-cultural discussion in Indonesian is a regular feature.

VCE Support classes

TERM 3         10 sessions        14th July - 15th September, 2010

These classes are held on Wednesday evenings from 6.00pm to 7.30pm and involve a fee of $480 for 10 sessions.

Participants should join these classes only if they have an expectation of being able to attend them all. They provide an opportunity for Year 11 and Year 12 VCE students to focus on presenting their detailed studies in a tutorial environment with a qualified native-speaking teacher, Pak Tata Survi. The series of 10 sessions will increase students' learning capacity and help prepare for the final VCE exam. They are not, however, exam practice classes; instead they support students in improving their oral and writing skills and in developing confidence for their oral presentations
