AIAV Annual Gala Dinner 2024

Dear AIAV Members,

Let’s enjoy and support our community at this year’s Gala Dinner with special guest speakers, cultural performances, door prizes and more!
Through the theme of Kebaya we are celebrating the empowerment of women. Hari Kebaya Nasional / National Kebaya Day is now official and will be held every year on the 24th of July, commencing this year. This event will be the first to celebrate the day outside Indonesia.
Kebaya is the graceful, traditional blouse-dress combination that originated from the court of the Javanese Majapahit Kingdom. Historically, the kebaya was worn by women as a symbol of status, dignity and femininity. Over time, it has evolved to represent cultural connection, artistry and leadership.
In AIAV Gala Dinner, we are very excited to have Professor Angel Damayanti and Professor Kate McGregor as our guest speakers.
Angel is an international policy expert and Director based at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Universitas Kristen Indonesia. She provides professional advice to Indonesian Ministries such as the National Counterterrorism Agency, the Presidential Advisory Council, the Ministry of Religion and the Coordinating Ministry for Politics, Law and Security. She has a keen interest in how security policy development impacts women of different backgrounds in Indonesia.
Kate is a historian of Indonesia and is currently an Associate Dean based in the School of Historical and Philosophical Studies at the University of Melbourne. Her research interests include Indonesian historiography, memories of violence, the Indonesian military, Islam and identity in Indonesia and historical international links between Indonesia and the world. She teaches, has supervised many PhDs and has written many books and publications.
We will also have special performances from Indonesian musical duo Hezy & Sasha and dancers Tika and Ami from Sanggar Lestari Dance Melbourne Dance School sharing dances tari Puspapanjali (Bali) and tari Gandrung Seblang Lukinto (Banyuwangi, Java).
