31st December 2019 – 15 January 2020 (Flight departing 28th or29th December. Course runs 1–14 January 2020)
The course is devised and conducted by Pak Tata Survi, using communicative and task-based activities. It is directed at students who have completed year 10 or year 11 in Australian secondary schools. It is based in Yogyakarta (also known as Jogjakarta or Jogja) in central Java.
Victorian students about to begin year 12 will have the opportunity to begin preparation for their detailed study under the guidance of Pak Survi, who is an experienced teacher and examiner of year 12 VCE Indonesian.
Classes are held Monday to Friday from 9 am until 3.30 pm. The day consists of formal instruction on most weekday mornings, followed by a ‘mission’, which involves participants in small groups putting their language skills into practice by gathering, seeking and recording information and carrying out practical tasks in the field. The ‘missions’ are then reviewed in class in the afternoons.
One or two full-day group excursions out of town will also form part of the program.
Students spend the weekends with their host families.
Students stay with Indonesian families who will have a child of the same sex and similar age. Individual homestay is regarded as an essential element of the language and cultural experience provided by the course.
Students will not be able to stay with a friend, schoolmate or relation, or to stay in a hotel.
Airfares are arranged by IndoAustay and flights will depart on the 29th or 30th of December 2019 (TBC) to ensure arrival in Jogjarkata before the busy New Year's Eve period). Departure for the return trip to Australia will be on the 15th January 2020.
Participants will be met by their host families at Jogjakarta’s Adisucipto Airport and returned to the airport at the end of the course.
The cost of the course is $3000, which covers all tuition and group activities, homestay costs, including laundry, transport while in Yogyakarta, and all meals. A $500 deposit is payable by 16th August, with the remaining balance to be paid by 30th September.
Airfares, and limited travel insurance are included spending money and incidentals are not covered in the above cost.
Students travelling on an Australian passport do not require a visa.
